Description

By pitching their music somewhere between the arena-friendly style of U2 and the mature pop/rock of bands like Maroon 5 and Counting Crows, the Fray rose to commercial prominence with their 2005 debut, How to Save a Life. The Denver-based band had formed three years prior, when former schoolmates Isaac Slade (vocals, piano) and Joe King (guitar, vocals) unexpectedly bumped into each other at a local music store. The pair began a series of two-man jam sessions and soon expanded their lineup with two of Slade's former bandmates, drummer Ben Wysocki and guitarist David Welsh. Slade's younger brother, Caleb, also joined the band for a stint but was ultimately asked to leave; the resulting rift between the two siblings would later inspire the band's first hit single, "Over My Head (Cable Car)."

The Fray’s third studio outing was produced by Brendan O’Brien and was inspired by the group’s trips to Rwanda and Germany. The resulting Scars and Stories, which was named after an unused B-side, was preceded by the single “Heartbeat” and will be released on February 7, 2012. (Andrew Leahey, Rovi)

The Fray

Piano driven melodies, inspirational lyrics, and an alt-rock flare were the formula of success for The Fray. With only two albums under their belt, the band has become one of pop music's favorites. The Fray tour dates are scheduled periodically throughout 2011.

Forged in Christian schools in Denver, the band met through their affiliation with Faith Christian Academy in the early 2000s. Following graduation from the school, the band released their first album, Movement EP in 2002. They followed that up with the Reason EP and began to accumulate a following in the Denver metro area. A single "Over my Head (Cable Car)" was released to radio and made an immediate impact on local stations. In 2004 an Epic Records A&R exec stumbled upon the band and they were soon signed to a deal.

The Fray debuted How to Save a Life in 2005 and released the single that got them the deal to national radio. The slow burning success of "Over My Head (Cable Car)" was sweet indeed. After fourteen weeks on the charts it finally peaked at #8 on the Hot 100 giving the band their first top ten single and it became the fifth most downloaded single of 2006. The second single "How to Save a Life" was licensed out to several TV shows including Grey's Anatomy and Scrubs before peaking at #3 on the Hot 100. In support of the album, The Fray tour dates were scheduled internationally and produced a live album entitled Live at the Electric Factory: Bootleg No. 1 which was recorded in Philadelphia. A subsequent live album Acoustic in Nashville: Bootleg No. 2 was also released in 2006.

The band returned to the studio in 2008 to finish their self-titled sophomore set. Released in 2009, the album featured the lead-off track "You Found Me" which debuted at #28 on the Hot 100. The album debuted at #3 selling nearly 200k copies in its maiden week. The band also produced a cover of the Kanye West hit "Heartless" which was released in 2009 to iTunes. Following their foray into hip-hop, they were invited to work with Timbaland on his Shock Value II album on the song "Undertow". Since 2010, the band released another EP entitled Christmas as a free download and are currently in the studio working on their third album.

With their heartwarming lyrics and powerful messages, The Fray easily developed a critical and commercial following. They were recently nominated for two Grammy Awards for their sophomore album and hope to recreate the success on their third. The Fray tour dates are currently scheduled periodically throughout 2011.
