NGSS in Action: Community Mapping with Crosscutting Concepts (Pierce County)
“The workshop introduced concepts that were new to me (like asset mapping) and we got a chance to try it out. I liked the combination of conceptual work and hands-on experience. Also talking to teachers from different grade levels and schools made it a richer conversation.” – Anne Huckins, Tukwila School District Mapping neighborhood assets, opportunities, and problems can engage students more deeply in science and engineering. Learn how system models, patterns, and observing change over time can help students investigate and map ecosystems, water flow, and assets in their community. By the end of this workshop you’ll have strategies to use in identifying local assets, mapping your community, and incorporating community mapping into your curriculum. Important Notes: Location is still to be determined and the date may change. We will update as they are finalized. We recommend taking our Science in your Schoolyard Workshop before this one. This workshop is also taking place in south Snohomish County, south King County and Kitsap County. It is intended for teachers and informal educators who teach science to 2nd through 8th grade students. Other teachers are welcome to join but may find the examples provided less relevant to their classrooms. Consider bringing your grade level team so you can collaborate with them during the workshop. This workshop includes an $80 stipend for public school teachers who complete related surveys. The stipend will be mailed (with other stipends and workshop fee refunds) at the end of the school year. 4 STEM clock hours are available pending approval from the Puget Sound ESD. Clock hours will need to be claimed and paid for on the ESD website after the workshop is complete. This program is funded by OSPI through its ClimeTime Grant.
