PAWA presents a Mitch Baird PLEIN AIR Workshop - 2019
Plein Air Washington Artists members are invited to enjoy a Plein Air Workshop in the beautiful northwest with renowned artist, Mitch Baird. As a representational painter, Mitch believes that painting is a celebration of life and the beauty that surrounds us. He is devoted to the traditions of the late 19th century artists who looked to the figure and nature for inspiration regarding light, color, and design. Seeking out this inspiration, Mitch works directly from life to capture the qualities and nuances of natural light and color harmony. He has a strong conviction that great artistic communication depends on good draftsmanship, design, and vision. His artistic desire is to “portray a positive visual statement and hope the viewer will experience what I see and in some sense be inspired, uplifted, or moved by my painting, whether it is of a small intimate setting or a grandiose subject.” Join Mitch in this THREE-DAY PLEIN AIR WORKSHOP Members have a unique opportunity to paint en plein air side-by-side with Mitch Baird (for a non-member, contact Karen Bakke to be on the list. There may be an increase in price). WHEN: June 4-6, 2019 TIME: 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM with a 1 hour sack lunch break. COST: $350 per person for the full 3-day plein air workshop with demo and individual instruction. For more information, contact Karen Bakke, workshop facilitator, at 360-421-3178 or email@example.com The locations may change, depending on weather or change of plans. These are tentative spots picked out for painting. Day One (Tuesday, June 4) - We will meet at 9:00 AM at The Depot in Anacortes. Mitch will introduce himself and give a little demo. From there, we will be going to our painting location. Depending on the weather, we will either paint along a nearby trail (there are gazebos) or go to the view at Cap Sante Park to paint. Day Two (Wednesday, June 5) - We will meet at 9:00 AM at Deception Pass State Park. The main entrance is on the Whidbey Island side. We will have a shelter and be painting at North Beach. You will need a Discover Pass or pay at the park entrance. After you enter, stay to the right, turn right at the first right to North Beach. There is parking and bathrooms. The trail goes down to the beach and the shelter. Cell service is not great there, so if you are not familiar with the park, ask for a map and directions at the gate. Day 3 (Thursday, June 6) - We will meet at 9:00 AM at Calico Cupboard in La Conner. (they have coffee and pastries...) There is a large gravel parking area next to Calico Cupboard and a $5 parking area past that in the same parking lot. Or there is a large parking area on 3rd street below Town Hall, walking distance. Drop your supplies with someone at the Calico Cupboard bench and drive over there. We will be painting on the walkway that is on the water side of the town buildings. You may access the walkway from several points. The scene is the La Conner "Rainbow" Bridge and the boats along the water with nice distance views. We can discuss a final dinner to wrap up the workshop in LaConner. Because of the varied painting locations, lodging can be found at the many hotel locations in Burlington, Mount Vernon, La Conner, or Anacortes. Call or email Karen if you want advice on places to stay or for other types of lodging/camping in the area. Students should bring their painting gear, trash bags, appropriate clothing for weather and terrain, and a sack lunch, water/drinks, and snacks. Other options to bring - cooler, sunglasses, bug spray, sunscreen, painting umbrella. WHERE: Anacortes, Deception Pass, LaConner. May have slight changes, depending on weather.
