Rainier Symphony - Poems: Prophetic and Pastoral
Our second Classics Concert this season features music that aligns with literary and visual art forms. Consisting of 3 tone poems, the bulk of this concert is meant to depict pastoral scenes from the countryside, commentary on political revolutions, and an existential view of the journey from birth to death. Also on this program our principal oboist, Michael Melnick, will step out of the wind section to solo on Vaughan-Williams' pastoral Oboe Concerto in A minor. Lund, Music Director Ilkka Talvi, Concertmaster More about the concert: For our second Classics Concert, we'll focus on music that was intended to tell a story. The concert's theme is Poems: Prophetic and Pastoral. This concert is comprised of one concerto, and three tone poems, all of which fall into the focus of our concert theme. The first half of this concert will open with Bedich Smetana's most famous piece titled Vltava, or in English: The Moldau. This work admirably depicts the coming together of tributaries to collectively embolden one another into a massive, flowing body of water. The lyricism in this piece includes one of the most beloved melodies in all of western art music. Following this piece will be the Ralph Vaughan Williams' Oboe Concerto in A minor, which will feature our own principal oboist, Michael Melnick. This concerto is a technical marathon for the string players, which creates a dramatic tone palette for the soloist to draw colors and textures upon. Both of these works focus on the pastoral nature of this concert's theme. The second half of the concert will be comprised of two tone poems that are more serious in their inspiration. First is Dmitri Shostakovich's lesser-known tone poem, October, Op. 131. This piece was written in memory and celebration of the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution. While political, this piece offers a prophecy of what will happen again (in Shostakovich's belief) if the country continues to repeat its political actions. Following this is Franz Liszt's existential exploration into the meaning of life, death, and everything in between. In his tone poem, Les préludes, Liszt draws upon the writings of French poet Joseph Autran and his musings/philosophies on life, its purpose, and the environment we create in our experience of it. One of 13 tone poems based on these writings, Les préludes is the most popular, and the tone poem that opened my own eyes and ears to this period of Liszt's compositional life.
