This Is Not The Little Prince

Saturday, June 8, 2019, 3:00 AM - 5:00 AM

"This Is Not the Little Prince" is Whim W'Him's newest full-length contemporary dance production featuring choreography by Olivier Wevers and original music by composer, multi-instrumentalist, and conductor Brian Lawlor. Embark on a journey of wonderment, taming, and exploring what is visible only to the heart. Delight in richly layered and allusive choreography, original composition and surrealist aesthetic in the spirit of Belgian painter René Magritte. Rekindle lost innocence in this reimagined rendering of St Exupéry's universal parable. Performances will take place in Seattle over four evenings in June 2019. Showcasing the artistry and athleticism of our professional dancers, "This Is Not the Little Prince" promises to captivate audiences. Although inspired by the classic book "The Little Prince" this production is not an adaptation or merely a reimagining. The narrative by Saint-Exupéry serves as the soil for a surreal and layered blend of music, dance, and design representing the value of creativity and the loss of openness as we grow older. `The project's title encapsulates its two major sources of inspiration: Surrealism and Le Petit Prince. Like the relation of the pipe in the painting Ceci n'est pas une pipe to an actual physical pipe, the dance creation ‘This is not The Little Prince' has only an oblique connection to the story of that name by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. Certain themes (traveler, wise child, the bureaucratic abstractions of grownups, the particularity of love), as well as some characters, will arise from the story. But the piece is not conceived as an adaptation. Rather, the book serves as a sort of artistic library of ideas for the dance, nourishing a richly layered and allusive blend of movement, altered narrative, original musical composition and new surrealist design. "And now here is my secret, a very simple secret: It is only with the heart that one can see rightly, what is essential is invisible to the eye." - Saint-Exupéry
