WILD SKILLS Mountain Camp: Rainier 1

This SheJumps Wild Skills event is structured as multi day overnight camp experience in partnership with RMI Expeditions, Whittaker Mountaineering and Bight Gear. Throughout the camp, girls are taught a range of outdoor skills incorporating science, technology, engineering, art, mathematics, communication, intuition and much more that are utilized by mountain guides, park rangers and recreational climbers and hikers as they interact with the mountain environment. Girls will learn a diverse range of wilderness skills while working with the strong women of the mountain community. This event is intended for advanced beginner + hikers ages 9-11 who identify as female. Participants must be capable of hiking a minimum of 3 miles and 1,500 feet of elevation gain in one day. This unique sleepaway camp offers girls the opportunity to work alongside passionate female mentors who have dedicated their lives to the preservation and promotion of our greatest alpine treasures. This transformative experience encourages participants to learn new skills, take on challenges and think creatively which in turn will develop perseverance and foster confidence. We want Wild Skills to be an experience they will remember, one that will spark a lifetime of passion for the outdoors and will remind them that they are capable of anything. STEAM Incorporation: Science: snow science, water study, glacier reduction, sustainability, environmental impact Technology: solar power, beacon search, weather stations Engineering: shelters, trail maintenance, pulleys, knots & ropes Art: recording inspiration, introspection, process, opinions, mediums, creation Mathematics: collecting data, analysis of data, methods of measurement SCHEDULE Monday, July 22 Day 1: Communication & Camping Basics At 9am, campers will meet up in Puyallup/Tacoma area for a gear check prior to packing up into the van and heading out to Mt Rainier National Park. We’ll spend the drive learning more about each other, team building and learning more about communication techniques. On our way out we'll stop in to RMI Expeditions in Ashford, WA and get the guide program rundown and climb the ice wall. Upon arrival at the campground, we’ll enjoy lunch and construct basecamp learning to select sites, create shelters, prep outdoor meals, Leave No Trace principles and other camping basics. We’ll finish out the day with the history of Mt Rainier, attending a ranger talk and dinner around the campfire. Tuesday, July 23 Day 2: Navigation & First Aid We’ll start the day with breakfast, yoga and lunch prep followed by the morning briefing to line out the day’s activities. The morning will be filled with practicing map skills, route finding, compasses and utilizing GPS units. By 10:00 we’ll load up the van and head out for a hike to Panorama Point where we’ll practice wilderness first aid skills in realistic injury scenarios. By 5pm, we'll enjoy dinner and prep gear for Wednesday’s Mountaineering day. Wednesday, July 24 Day 3: Mountaineering & Survival Wednesday is our biggest day starting early with breakfast and travel to Paradise where we’ll meet up with RMI Expeditions guides for a full day of mountaineer training. The group will dial out gear and hike to the snowline for introductions to harnesses, walking in crampons, using a ice axe and self arrest. Other activities will include snow science, data gathering, risk assessment, adaption, building survival shelters and of course, TONS OF SNOW FILLED FUN! We’ll wrap up the day with a on mountain sunset dinner. Thursday, July 25 Day 4: Engineering & Ingenuity Thursday will be all about exploring the park’s engineering achievements. We'll head out for a hike to Snow Lake which is just below the magical Unicorn Peak in the Tatoosh Range. Throughout the day we’ll analyze bridges, trail maintenance techniques and historical structures. In the afternoon, the campers will be placed in teams and tasked with creating solutions for specific challenges the park
